I'm a web developer and bookseller. I really believe that reading is crucial to getting people involved in causes.  Right now the amount of people reading has dropped dramatically  (according to the NEA). I also know this to be true from my own bookselling experience. A literate and educated populace is essential to a democracy. The results of the lack of reading can be seen in election campaigns, the inability for Americans to construct a complete thought when arguing a point in a debate, and the incredible ability of media corporations to mislead the public on information that is readily available. Hence getting people (especially young people) to read is the cause that I work on with my online bookstore, blog, and Meetup group.
